Prelude #1 – The Circle – online

The impetus for this piece was Rhapsodie, a work by Sylvain Émard for 20 dancers that was programmed to be part of Danse Danse’s season in November 2020 but was postponed. Inspired by the ritual aspect of dance, Rhapsodie celebrates the visceral, instinctive parts of our nature, capturing the driving force of life and the sometimes subversive abandon of bodies in movement.

In response to the pandemic, the choreographer conceived Preludes as harmonized overtures that announce Rhapsodie, using current constraints to explore the very essence of the work, now deeply shaken. Like a sudden, unexpected change of course, Preludes have propelled the choreography into new territories.

The film version of the work was part of the official selection of the 39th International Festival on Films on Art (Montreal).

Prelude #1 – The Circle is part of the diptych Preludes, also comprised by Prelude #2 – The Square.
